Neoprene CH&E Diaphragms
Neoprene is the most commonly specified diaphragm material for CH&E pumps in construction dewatering, groundwater control, and concrete cutting and grinding applications. It handles the combination of physical wear, vibration, and outdoor exposure that CH&E pumps experience in these environments better than natural rubber, at a cost that makes it practical for routine replacement.
Neoprene is the right choice for CH&E pumps handling:
- Clean to moderately contaminated groundwater without significant hydrocarbon content
- Construction slurry from wet concrete cutting, surface grinding, and joint sawing
- Sediment-laden surface water and trench water in active construction environments
- Outdoor pump operation with exposure to UV, ozone, and temperature variation
Neoprene is not the right choice when the water contains significant oil, fuel, or chemical content. Use Buna/nitrile or TPE/Santoprene for those conditions.

Rubber CH&E Diaphragms
General-purpose rubber diaphragms are the most cost-effective option for CH&E pumps handling clean water, standard groundwater, and lightly turbid water without chemical or hydrocarbon contamination. Rubber delivers excellent flex life in clean-water applications and is a practical choice for CH&E pump owners who need a reliable, economical diaphragm for standard dewatering work.
Rubber is the right choice for CH&E pumps handling:
- Clean groundwater and surface water on construction sites
- Standard dewatering where the water does not contain oil, fuel, or chemical contaminants
- Pond pumping and general water transfer in clean-water environments
- Intermittent-use applications where the pump does not run continuously for extended hours
Rubber is not recommended for outdoor pump storage environments with significant UV and ozone exposure over time. Neoprene or TPE/Santoprene will last longer in those conditions.
Buna/Nitrile CH&E Diaphragms
Buna-N nitrile is the correct diaphragm material when the fluid being pumped contains petroleum products, fuels, hydraulic fluid, or other hydrocarbons. CH&E pumps are used in demolition, industrial, and environmental remediation work where oily wastewater and fuel-contaminated groundwater are common. In those applications, rubber and neoprene will degrade rapidly, and Buna/nitrile is the appropriate specification.
Buna/nitrile is the right choice for CH&E pumps handling:
- Oily wastewater and fuel-contaminated groundwater on industrial and demolition sites
- Petroleum-containing slurry and wash water from equipment cleaning operations
- Groundwater with hydrocarbon contamination in environmental remediation applications
- Any fluid with a significant oil or fuel component that would cause rubber or neoprene to swell or degrade
Note: Buna/nitrile has limited weather and ozone resistance compared to neoprene. It is best suited for applications where the diaphragm is protected from prolonged UV and ozone exposure between pump uses.
Temperature range: approximately -40F to 250F for Buna/nitrile compounds. Confirm for your specific application.
TPE Santoprene CH&E Diaphragms
TPE Santoprene diaphragms are the longest-lasting option Ken’s Distributing carries for CH&E pumps, and they are the correct choice for CH&E applications involving continuous-duty operation, abrasive slurry, chemical exposure beyond what neoprene handles reliably, or situations where diaphragm failure and unplanned downtime carry a high operational cost.
Santoprene combines the flex fatigue resistance needed for high-cycle CH&E pump applications with broader chemical tolerance and better temperature range than rubber or neoprene. The higher per-unit cost compared to rubber and neoprene is typically justified in applications where those materials require more frequent replacement.
TPE Santoprene is the right choice for CH&E pumps handling:
- Abrasive slurry in high-cycle, continuous-duty applications where rubber and neoprene wear out too quickly
- Fluids with mild chemical content, dilute acids, alkalis, or cleaning agents where neoprene is marginally compatible
- Applications where pump downtime is costly and the longest available diaphragm service life is the priority
- Cold-climate operation where rubber diaphragms stiffen and lose sealing performance in low temperatures
