Continuous-duty, high-cycle applications: Pumps that run for extended hours daily put rubber and neoprene diaphragms through significantly more flex cycles than intermittent-use pumps. Santoprene’s fatigue resistance means it maintains structural integrity and sealing performance longer under these conditions.
Applications involving chemical exposure beyond water and slurry: If the fluid being pumped contains detergents, mild acids, mild alkalis, cleaning solutions, or other water-based chemical solutions, rubber and neoprene will degrade faster than Santoprene. Environments with significant temperature variation: Santoprene maintains its mechanical properties across a wider temperature range than rubber or neoprene, making it suitable for applications where pump operating temperatures fluctuate significantly or where cold-weather operation causes rubber diaphragms to stiffen and lose sealing performance.
Outdoor storage and operation: Santoprene resists UV degradation and ozone exposure better than natural rubber, which matters for pumps that are stored outdoors between uses or operated in direct sunlight for extended periods.
Operations where diaphragm replacement downtime is costly: If replacing a diaphragm means stopping a production line, a municipal bypass operation, or a critical dewatering operation, specifying the longest-lasting diaphragm material available is a straightforward cost-benefit decision.
Where TPE Santoprene is not necessarily the right choice: If your pump handles clean water or standard construction groundwater without chemical content, and the pump runs intermittently rather than continuously, rubber or neoprene will deliver acceptable service life at a lower cost per diaphragm. The correct material depends on your actual application conditions, not on the assumption that more expensive always means better.
