Choose the FTT Pump for Your Application
The FTT-20 covers the 2-inch piping class, the FTT-30 the 3-inch class, and the FTT-40 the 4-inch class. A larger connection does not automatically mean a better match. The required duty point, drive speed, liquid characteristics and piping losses determine the right choice.
- Irrigation and farm water transfer: Select from the pond or reservoir level, required field flow and discharge head.
- Construction dewatering: Compare suction lift, sediment conditions and peak water removal needs before choosing a size.
- Water truck filling and dust control: Confirm discharge hose size, target tank-filling time and suitable belt or direct drive.
- Municipal and industrial water handling: Review the performance curves and the pump material ratings for the specific service.

| FTT-40 | 803 | 4 x 4 | 30.06 | 3.00 | 3.57 | .56 | 7.25 | 9.00 | 6.64 | 9.00 | 14.00 | 26.50 | 11.76 | 7.00 | -4.76 | 7.75 | 15.50 | 8.88 | 8.88 | 17.76 | 1.625 | 3/8 x 3/8 |
The supplied dimension table contains negative-looking P values (-3.75 for FTT-30 and -4.76 for FTT-40). These are retained as supplied, not independently verified. Confirm the P dimension against the manufacturer drawing before using it for installation or fabrication.
Self-Priming, Solids Handling and Maintenance
FTT pumps use a self-priming centrifugal design with a clean-out access cover and a built-in suction check valve. The initial pump housing still needs to be filled before startup. After shutdown, inspect the valve and suction piping if the unit loses prime.
- Check valve and flapper: A worn or obstructed check valve can cause slow priming and may call for the model-specific flapper, weight, valve or gasket.
- Impeller and wear ring: Reduced flow can result from excessive wear or clearance. The FTT parts breakdown lists a replaceable wear ring by model.
- Mechanical seal: Leaks at the shaft can indicate seal wear. Confirm the original seal number because the source list and published owner’s manual disagree.
- Bearing frame: Check for unusual noise, vibration, shaft play and alignment issues before ordering bearings or a replacement shaft.
- Setup: Keep suction piping airtight, choose suitable speed and drive components, and do not run the pump dry.
FTT Versus FMIT Frame Mount Self-Priming Pumps
Both are frame-mounted self-priming centrifugal families for irrigation and water transfer. Their key difference is the intended solids-handling method and hydraulic setup. Compare the actual curves rather than selecting on the series-wide maximum alone.
| Factor | FTT Series | FMIT Series |
|---|---|---|
| Impeller design | Two-vane enclosed cast iron | Semi-open cast iron |
| Wear components | Replaceable wear ring in FTT parts list | Replaceable wear plate on FMIT |
| Primary selection consideration | Spherical-solid passage and higher series-wide flow ceiling | Applications involving mud, sand and silt within the rated duty |
| Drive format | Frame-mounted, belt or direct drive | Frame-mounted, belt or direct drive |
| How to choose | Verify flow, head, solid size and selected RPM | Verify flow, head, solids conditions and selected RPM |
Compare the Franklin Electric FMIT frame-mount self-priming pump if your application involves abrasive solids or calls for the FMIT hydraulic design. The two pump series should not be assumed to share service parts.
Frequently Asked Questions About FTT Pumps and Repair Parts
What are the FTT-20, FTT-30 and FTT-40 pump order numbers?
FTT-20 is 90240002 with 2-inch ports, FTT-30 is 90240003 with 3-inch ports, and FTT-40 is 90240004 with 4-inch ports. Select using duty-point performance and piping requirements.
Is the FTT Series self-priming?
Yes, after the initial casing fill. The suction check valve helps retain priming liquid for subsequent starts. Air leaks, excessive suction lift or a worn flapper can prevent proper priming.
Can I replace the FTT impeller without buying a complete pump?
Yes, the FTT exploded-parts list identifies model-specific impellers: 305454004 for FTT-20, 305454005 for FTT-30 and 305454006 for FTT-40. Confirm the pump model before ordering.
Which FTT mechanical seal fits my pump?
The supplied list and a published Franklin Electric manual disagree on figure 90 seal part numbers. Send Ken’s Distributing Company the pump model, existing seal number or photo so the correct part can be checked.
What is the difference between a wear ring and a wear plate?
The FTT parts diagram names a replaceable wear ring (figure 4); the FMIT is described with a replaceable wear plate. When ordering FTT parts, use the model-specific wear-ring number rather than assuming FMIT parts fit.
Does the FTT-20/40 name mean 20 to 40 GPM?
No. It refers to the FTT-20, FTT-30 and FTT-40 models with 2-, 3- and 4-inch ports. The series is marketed for much higher flow, up to 740 GPM at the appropriate operating condition.
Do the FTT pumps include a drive motor?
These are frame-mount centrifugal pump ends designed for an appropriately engineered belt or direct drive. Confirm the required drive hardware, speed, alignment and motor/engine sizing when requesting a quote.
Can Ken’s Distributing Company quote both a pump and repair parts?
Yes. Send the full FTT model and pump item number for a complete unit, or the replacement part number and figure reference for a parts quote. Include your required delivery location and quantity.
