FACGF Pump Manuals & Resources

The Franklin Electric FACGF gas engine driven centrifugal pump series is designed for water transfer, irrigation, construction, mining, commercial, municipal, and light industrial applications where a gasoline engine provides power without an onsite electrical connection. The series combines a cast iron volute, enclosed cast iron impeller, and mechanical shaft seal in a horizontally mounted pump-and-engine assembly.

Models include the FACGF-5, FACGF-5H, FACGF-8H, and FACGF-23K. Engine configurations span Briggs & Stratton, Honda, and Kohler, with suction and discharge ports from 2 inches to 2.5 inches depending on the model. Ken’s Distributing Company can help identify the appropriate model, verify current availability, and locate replacement parts.

Franklin Electric FACGF Features and Specifications

  • Pump design: Gas engine driven, end-suction centrifugal pump. Not self-priming.
  • Volute: Rugged cast iron construction with vent and drain openings.
  • Impeller: Enclosed cast iron for pressure-oriented water pumping applications.
  • Mechanical seal: Carbon/ceramic faces, FKM (fluoroelastomer) elastomers, and stainless steel components.
  • Installation: Horizontal mounting; NPT threaded suction and discharge connections.
  • Engine: Model-dependent Briggs & Stratton, Honda, or Kohler gasoline engine; adjustable throttle.
  • Series maximum capacity: Up to 270 US GPM.
  • Series maximum head: Up to 240 feet.
  • Maximum working pressure: 150 PSI; maximum liquid temperature: 200°F.
  • Rotation: Clockwise when viewed from motor/engine end, per the series catalog.

Maximum flow, maximum head, and maximum allowable working pressure are separate specifications. Actual flow at a given discharge head depends on the model and operating conditions. Use the published performance curve and verify suitability before ordering.

FACGF-23K engine displacement: Franklin Electric’s current model listing states 728 cc, while the archived series catalog and older ordering table state 725 cc. Confirm the installed Kohler engine identification and serial number before ordering engine components. The FACGF-23K is electric-start equipped; the older catalog specifies that the battery and fuel tank are not included.

FACGF-8: This model appears in earlier Franklin Electric service and replacement-engine references but not in the current four-model product listing. Its specifications and repair-part entries are retained below to help identify existing equipment. Do not assume it is available as a new complete pump.

Choosing the Right FACGF Model

FACGF-5 and FACGF-5H: 2-Inch Gas Engine Pumps

The FACGF-5 uses a 205 cc Briggs & Stratton engine and the FACGF-5H uses a 160 cc Honda engine. Both models are listed with 2-inch suction and 2-inch discharge connections. Compare the required flow and head against the manufacturer’s performance chart rather than choosing solely by engine brand.

FACGF-8H: Honda-Powered 2-Inch Pump

The FACGF-8H uses a 270 cc Honda engine and 2-inch NPT suction and discharge connections. It is a distinct model from the earlier FACGF-8 Briggs & Stratton configuration identified in the service parts documentation.

FACGF-23K: Kohler-Powered 2.5-Inch Pump

The FACGF-23K features a Kohler engine, 2.5-inch suction and discharge connections, and electric starting. Manufacturer documentation lists an approximate pump-unit weight of 275 lb. Confirm battery, fuel tank, engine identification, and installation requirements before procurement.

Where FACGF Centrifugal Pumps Are Used

  • Agricultural irrigation: Transferring relatively clean water to field irrigation equipment where engine power is preferred.
  • Construction water supply: Providing temporary water transfer at sites without a fixed electrical supply, subject to suction and hydraulic requirements.
  • Commercial and municipal applications: Temporary circulation or water transfer with a portable engine-driven pump.
  • Mining and light industrial use: Moving compatible water-based liquids in installations that benefit from an engine-driven centrifugal pump.

The FACGF uses an enclosed impeller. It should not be represented as a trash pump or specified for abrasive solids without confirmation of the actual liquid characteristics and manufacturer guidance.

Installation and Priming Requirements

Important: The FACGF is not self-priming. Franklin Electric’s FACGF owner’s manual instructs installers to fit a foot valve at the bottom of the suction line and to fill the pump casing and suction line with water before starting the engine. Running the pump dry may damage the mechanical seal or impeller.

  • Place the unit on a firm, level surface near the water source and secure it against movement from vibration.
  • Keep the suction hose free of air leaks and kinks; use suction piping and foot-valve sizes at least as large as the pump’s suction connection.
  • Confirm the specific model’s suction and discharge dimensions before selecting fittings.
  • Follow Franklin Electric’s priming procedure and the engine manufacturer’s operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Check liquid compatibility. The manual prohibits pumping flammable fluids.
  • Shut down the engine before servicing, and drain the cast iron pump housing for freezing conditions or storage.

For installation instructions and the performance curve, consult the Franklin Electric FACGF manufacturer product and support page.

FACGF Performance and Pump Selection

Franklin Electric provides performance curves for the FACGF model groups in its series catalog. Use the required flow rate (GPM), total dynamic head (feet), suction lift, and piping losses to select the correct configuration. The catalog maximum of 270 GPM and 240 feet of head should not be interpreted as a single operating point.

When matching an existing unit, provide the FACGF model, engine make, complete engine model or serial number, and any part number visible on the component being replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions About Franklin Electric FACGF Pumps

Is the Franklin Electric FACGF self-priming?

No. Franklin Electric’s owner’s manual explicitly states that FACGF pumps are not self-priming. A foot valve must be installed, and the pump casing and suction line must be filled with water before startup.

What FACGF models are currently shown by Franklin Electric?

The manufacturer lists FACGF-5 (90261005), FACGF-5H (90261105), FACGF-8H (90261108), and FACGF-23K (90261323). The older FACGF-8 appears in archival technical and parts documentation.

How do the FACGF connection sizes differ?

FACGF-5, FACGF-5H and FACGF-8H use 2-inch suction and discharge connections. The FACGF-23K uses 2.5-inch suction and discharge connections.

What is the maximum capacity of the FACGF series?

The published FACGF series limits are up to 270 GPM flow and 240 feet of head, with a maximum working pressure of 150 PSI. These limits are not simultaneous guaranteed operating values.

Which engine is fitted to FACGF-23K?

The FACGF-23K uses a Kohler engine and electric start. The current manufacturer listing identifies 728 cc, while an older catalog states 725 cc. Confirm the physical engine identification before ordering service parts.

Are replacement parts available for older FACGF pumps?

Parts references are provided above for FACGF-5, FACGF-5H, FACGF-8, FACGF-8H and FACGF-23K. Contact Ken’s Distributing Company with your model and part number to verify fit and availability before ordering.
