Engine drive answers one problem: getting water moved where there is no electricity to run a pump. That covers construction sites, fields, remote tanks and emergency work, and it is the reason these units dominate contractor and agricultural use.

The trade is maintenance and placement. There is a fuel system and combustion to look after, and an engine pump must never be run indoors or in an enclosed space because of carbon monoxide. Where mains power is available, an electric pump is quieter, cleaner and generally longer lived.
